GEA Process Engineering supplies spray coolers (also referred to as spray congealers) for production of a wide range of food and chemical products. Spray cooling is defined as a melt transition from soft or fluid state to a rigid or solid powder form. It is applied because melts are much easier to handle - transport, dose and store - when available in powder form. 

The technology behind spray cooling is very similar to spray drying whereby a melt is atomized and cooled down in an airstream.

Different atomization technologies for different particle sizes
Different types of atomization are applied depending on the required particle size and characteristics:

  • For fine particles with a mean particle size of 50-150 micron a high speed rotary atomizer or high pressure nozzles, both in co-current mode is applied 
  • For coarse particles of up to 500 microns and melts that solidify slowly a fountain nozzle in a counter-current mode is applied
  • For extra coarse particles from 500 to 2000 microns (also referred to as prills) a low-speed rotary atomizer with a specially designed prilling wheel and a spray cooling chamber with a large diameter is applied

The GEA Niro Test Centre is available for making tests for product development and to form basis for sizing and designing of industrial-scale plants.

All GEA Niro spray cooling plants are very flexible and cost efficient solutions with regards to both investment and operation. They are designed to meet the requirements of customers and their local authorities and as such are available in:

  • Open, environmentally friendly plants with effective bag filters ensuring emission of clean exhaust process air
  • A closed cycle concept with a nitrogen purged process gas circuit
