Fluid Bed Granulation

Fluid bed processing involves drying, agglomeration, granulation, and cooling of particulate materials. In fluid bed drying heat is supplied by air/gas through the product layer to remove moisture contents in the powder material. Alternatively heating panels or tubes immersed in the fluidized powder layer can act as additional drying source.

Niro fluid bed dryers are suited for continuous processing of particles in powder, granular, agglomerated, and pellet form with particle sizes between 50-5000 microns. Very fine, light powders may require vibration for succesful fluid bed granulation and drying. The execution of dryers is characterized by high hygienic standards, pressure shock protection, self-emptying capability and automatic cleaning systems.

Fluid bed granulation may be performed in a number of ways depending upon the feed to be processed and the product properties to be achieved.

SECONDARY PHARMA : Direct compressibles
In the production of solid dosage forms very often a granulation step is often involved. The object is to avoid segregation and to ensure flow properties good enough to fill the dyes of a high-speed tablet press accurately. The concept of FSD-spray drying allows this granulation step to take place already at the end of primary production of the active requiring only an additional blending step with excipients suitable for direct compression afterwards.

Niro A/S offers a range of systems for processing. Continuous and batch dryers, coolers, agglomeration, coating, pelletizing and granulation systems are designed to operate in open cycle (involving water evaporation) or closed cycle (involving mostly organic solvent evaporation). For products posing a risk of dust explosion during processing, pressure shock resistant designs, self-inertized and closed cycle systems are available.
