GEA Niro of Copenhagen has opened its new pharmaceutical test centre to provide research and development services to its customers.  The test centre will allow Niro’s customers to work on product R&D and process evaluation projects without the need for early investment in plant or expertise.

Svenn Ryberg, the Vice President of GEA Niro, said recently that the test centre is being developed as part of Niro’s positioning to be seen more as a partner in the customer’s development activities than just as an equipment supplier.  “It is our aim to work with our customers to identify optimum processing techniques by combining their product know-how and our know-how on spray drying.”

The new centre is being built to GMP standards with clean room rating of 100,000; the process control will be full 21 CFR part 11 compliant.  It includes PSD 4, PSD 1 and SD Micro equipment to provide the widest possible range of spray drying technology for realistic testing and easy scale-up to full production.  The centre can evaluate spray drying processes using both aqueous and organic solvent feeds.  

By providing customers with this facility, GEA Niro will help them achieve the best product quality for the chosen drug delivery method with the minimum of development time and increased security of outcome.   Furthermore, test work can be performed during the project implementation phase giving valuable input to the validation process, providing training for the customer project team and reducing the commissioning period of the commercial production unit.
