Spray drying technology plays an important role in the production of the
next generation of batteries for electric vehicles and other high energy
applications. Lithium-ion materials for Li-ion batteries - lithium iron
phosphate (LiFePO4) and other - can be made using spray drying technology to
achieve a more energy dense battery.
GEA Niro has demonstrated the
applicability of the GEA Niro Rotary Atomizer for drying of such materials. In
this application, a rotary atomizer - applying the GEA Niro Rotary Atomizer
wheel type AX (patented) - offers a number of advantages that are in high
demand by the market; it produces a very fine powder with a narrow particle
size distribution ideal for further processing, and it does so consistently
because it is inherently wear-resistant towards the abrasive lithium-ion
materials being processed. This, in turn, implies low maintenance requirements.
The GEA Niro Rotary Atomizer also has comparatively low energy consumption, and
is very easy to adjust and operate. For solvent-based feeds, the spray drying
plant can be designed as a closed-cycle plant where the complete drying unit is
inertised to prevent explosions and to allow full recovery of the solvent.
